That's great, and here's some useful info

Okay, I really love the Howard Butcher Block Conditioner. I applied it to a carved block surface that had been largely neglected for years (my wife and I are restoring an old house) and it transformed a white, slightly stained surface to a beautiful gold, stain-resistant finish. Here are some of them. useful information if you are working with an old, unmaintained interface. Remember that the wood is likely to discolour: this is not because the product discolours the wood, it is because the wood discolours a little and the texture appears when you oil it. My wood has gone from almost whitish to a very nice golden hue. Keep in mind that if you are working on an old surface, you may need to apply enough coats. Howard says 3-4 coats should be applied to a new cutting block, but older, uncared for wood may need more. Oddly enough, my wood soaked up *more* oil with each coat I applied. I used to prep the wood before applying each coat, just polishing it and possibly removing the old wax. Or the pores in the wood have opened. I do not know. Warm conditioner works better than cold conditioner. I store things where it is of course slightly warmer than room temperature and only layer on warm days. I make applications for at least 48 hours. I don't know if this is necessary, but for the first few coats it took about the same amount of time to not leave any noticeable oiliness on the wood surface from the last treatment.

Pros

Cons
  • Long Lead Time
