I like to mix coir coir with sand for bedding for my hermit crabs. However, this sand was too fine (even when mixed with five inches of coco coir). Whenever I spray a crab tank, the sand becomes as hard as concrete and they can't break through where it sticks together. If this was the only substrate you had in the aquarium I could easily see it killing hermit crabs while they molt and are vulnerable. Since I mix it with other substances, I'm not entirely unhappy, but I warn you that this shouldn't be your only substrate in a hermit crab tank.
