Review on πŸ“Ό Maxell XLII-S High Bias Audio Cassette Tape - 100 Minutes by Raul Fabijan

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Amazingly good sound. Not as I remember. How long does it last? only time will tell.

When used with a 30 year old Sony deck, the result was not what I expected. I had the same old Maxell cassette I tried and it sounded pretty bad, but I also remember how cassettes sounded (that cassette sound?). Decided to try new stocks (hadn't bought a cassette in decades!). It was incredibly good! A lot of people these days are looking for cassette lo-fi stuff. I really haven't heard much. Yes, some bass roll-off, treble smoothing (as you'd expect), and a very slight "glue" if you listen closely and compare the two versions (which I did). To be honest, the machine used largely determines the result. Also what's going on (here; 96 kHz digital). Some cassette players saturate the tape more than others. Our older Sony doesn't seem to want that at all. But that's okay because what it does is still fantastically applicable to my needs and a lot of fun to experiment with. I will for sure get more. Very happy with the end result - not what I expected or I don't remember at all (maybe our ears are in the worst shape after all these years? lol). For your health.
