Neat stuff, but very expensive

TL;DR: This is a very nice electronics kit that will give your kids introduction into LED lighting, motors and the Internet of things. It is attractive, fairly well designed and a great teaching device. But it is expensive and you might be able to find other products that achieve the same things at a much lower price point. This is our third littleBits set. We also have purchased the Cloud starter set and the Korg Synthesizer set. I loved the synth set, but my son was unimpressed. I got the…

Pros
  • Fun
Cons
  • Can be overwhelming for young students who are not technologically inclined

Great for company team building and youth education

I ordered several of these kits, along with some cloudbits kits for a company team building event. The fluency of creation with them is fantastic, and we all had a great time. It literally takes minutes to get a basic IoT solution working. Since then we've repurposed them for youth education and I've been very happy with using them for that purpose. I've got lots of experience with breadboarding and a degree in electrical engineering, but when it comes to teaching a group of kids each working…

Pros
  • Learn engineering design cycle – create, play, remix, share
Cons
  • The kit can only support up to 3 students, making it unsuitable for larger classrooms

Break too easily - my new review

I wrote a grant to get 4 sets of these for my classroom. My gifted students absolutely love inventing things and I think the concept is amazing. That said, my students treat these with extreme care but they break SO easily. Each replacement part is $5-$15. I'm a public school teacher, there just aren't funds for replacement. It's very disappointing and I wish there was a way they could make these sturdier so that my students could enjoy them more.

Pros
  • It is nice, I love it!
Cons
  • Some bits can break easily with rough handling, leading to expensive replacements

it still is kind of fun for my 4 and 6 year old kids (even .

We got the littleBits starter set a year or so ago, and while it only has a few different modules, it still is kind of fun for my 4 and 6 year old kids (even though they are well below the 8+/3rd grade recommendation). I also enjoy playing with them, but really there weren't enough modules. This set adds a ton (well 19) of 'bits' (i.e. the modules) here is what you get:Power* USB Power* Power (via Barrel jack -- AC adapter and Battery adapter included)Outputs:* Fan* Buzzer* Long LED* RGB LED*…

Pros
  • Great for any classroom to encourage thinking and imaginations . Worth every penny .
Cons
  • Limited curriculum resources available for guidance and instruction on technology projects

Simple to figure out and easy to get started

My just turned 10-year old daughter loves this, and really didn't any guidance to get started on it. At some point we will study it to make the more involved projects, but in general, it's really just magnets that snap into place. The arrows guide them to point everything in the same direction. The car is her favorite thing to make so far, and she likes the fan and the light working together. It's a great starter kit, and offers a lot of fun.

Pros
  • Rapid delivery and good quality. My students and I love littleBit products.
Cons
  • Not suitable for children under the age of 8

Excellent educational STEM toy

Nice big set from LittleBits. Little bits makes very simple to use circuit toys that are educational and easy to use for most ages. The age range is 3rd thru 8th grade, but even my kinder-gardener was able to independently build things with this set.Set comes with a very nice color instruction manual that is easy to follow and is very helpful. The easier machines can be made in less than a minute, and that is so helpful to a beginner child - it gives encouragement and makes them want to try the…

Pros
  • Learning & Education
Cons
  • The kit may not prepare students for the technology needed in the workforce, depending on the field they choose

Interesting Concept

This is my 2nd LittleBits set I've reviewed and I still like the basic concept of modular electric and electronic components. This time they've responded to the main problem with the first generation sets: that the modules fall apart easily, by providing a Lego like backing board that attached modules can snap into allowing for more durable creations. However, there seems to be a manufacturing defect in one of switches, so I couldn't satisfactorily complete the build a vehicle task. I can…

Pros
  • Each color-coded Bit has a specific function (e.g. lights, sensors, motors, inputs, and outputs) and is reusable for infinite number of inventions
Cons
  • Without a dedicated teacher to supervise, some students may not use the kit properly or could accidentally harm themselves

littlebits of learning

My kids have built and rebuilt things nearly every day since this arrived. A 5 and 8 yr old no less. These are very simple, high quality kits with a lot of baked in learning potential. I highly recommend everything from littlebits!

Pros
  • Toys & Games
Cons
  • The kit requires a computer with internet access, which may not be available to some students at home

Tools for the Next Generation

Imagine where we might be technologically if the adults involved in science and invention had access when growing up to the maker tools and prototyping platforms that are easily accessible to grade schoolers today. I suppose we will find out in a few years when a new group of technologically and scientifically and mechanically astute young people begin to dazzle us with the fruits of their imagination. If you have a youngster who shows the slightest inclination toward the STEM disciplines, stop

Pros
  • Science Kits & Toys
Cons
  • Projects can take a significant amount of time to complete, which may not be feasible during class time

This is by far the best educational toy I have EVER seen: Perfectly combining fun and learning. My 8 year old daughter and I have now spent quite a few hours with these without tiring. She can't wait to "play" as she learns basic electrical engineering. This set has everything that is needed to get very deeply involved in the littleBits system. There are two power sources (9V and USB powered DC). Multiple input devices are also provided including buttons, pulse generators, light sensor…

Pros
  • Gain creative confidence and 21st century skills: critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication
Cons
  • Some students may find the materials less engaging than traditional science experiments

Steam student set in the special education classroom.

We use littleBits with students with special needs. The STEAM Kit is great because it includes everything to get started with some fun design challenges. The students love building vehicles and racing them. They also like the throwing arm. Some of our students used the omponents with other materials to create their own designs.

Pros
  • Free onboarding online Professional Development. Easy to teach with no prior STEM/STEAM experience
Cons
  • Some users may experience difficulties in connecting the bits and troubleshooting errors
