Review on πŸ”’ Enhanced Kenwood KCA-RC55MR Wired Marine Boat Remote for KMR-700U, KMR-550U, and KMR-700U by Cesar Rios

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Looks great but not very functional.

I installed two of these on my boat because my KMR-D768BT head unit is in the glove box and my wife isn't the best DJ. I put one on the rudder and one on the stern. They look great and work well even though I've only had them for about 2 weeks. Installation wasn't too difficult, but be sure to order enough connection cables and the necessary Y-cables if you're using multiple remotes. I make a living installing audio/video equipment and am pretty good at it, but I had a lot of trouble connecting the first remote (control) to the radio and thanks to the Revain reviews for helping me figure it out, because Kenwood's instructions could be a bit clearer. I tried the pairing process several times with no success, but turning the device off completely (not just "standby") and turning it back on solved the problem and the device was paired when the radio turned back on. When I attached a second remote to the rear (about a week apart as I had to order a longer cable), the pairing process worked immediately, although I had to pair the first remote again. In terms of functionality, I love that these remotes have a display, but that's about it. The keys are poorly pressed and often do not respond to your pressure. When I press the "Volume Down" button for a few clicks to decrease the level by 1-4, the radio is often at full or almost zero, which is a bit annoying. It's difficult to get through the various inputs as the keys don't always register, so you end up missing the right input. Overall I like the way they look and I like having remotes on the boat for volume control and power on/off. If I ever need to replace them, I'll just grab the non-display remotes and hope they work better. I award 2 stars because of the disappointing functionality and clarity of the installation instructions.

Pros
  • Rugged design
Cons
  • Modern
