Replacement wires not long enough to replace

First I liked the cheese slicer. I was excited because I had one of these styles before it lasted a few years and then the wire broke. I couldn't find a replacement cable anywhere. I was so excited to find it because it came with spare wires. I bought this food slicer in May 2021 and the wire just snapped. And I *can't* get the spare wire to bend 90 degrees enough for the little square metal pins on the ends to fit the squares in the slicer. I've been trying for over an hour now. I used needle nose pliers to bend the wire a bit. It bends, but not at such a sharp angle, which I think is necessary for the wire to be long enough for both squares to go in at the right angle. Tried pounding with a rubber mallet - didn't help. I tried screwing in just one bar and pulling as hard as I could on the other square bar to hard bend the wire so I could pull it through the other square hole - didn't work. If I had a house and space for a workbench with a clamp, maybe I could use the workbench clamp to steady one of the pins so I could clamp the wires at the sharp 90 degree angle clearly required for the swap . Working method, but no, I live in a small apartment, so I don't have space for a heavy workbench. Or maybe the wire is too short due to a manufacturing defect - I've looked at all the spare wires - and they all seem to be the same length so I'd have the same problem with all of them. . I don't think I'll ever buy these types of cheese wire cutters again because 1) they just don't last long enough - I like cheddar cheese best and it just wears down the wires and 2) the wires don't last at all so easy to swap. I'll come back to using knives.
