I bought it so my dogs wouldn't run around the house and climb where they shouldn't. After getting this setting, I realized how annoying it is to open it. It closes and latches easily, but to open it you have to lift the gate from the bottom latch mechanism that accepts the pin by pressing both top buttons before you can open it. It's not very smooth operation, especially with one hand, it's noisy and clumsy. REMOVE the bottom locking mechanism and the problem will go away (see photo). It is held in place with just one Phillips head screw and can be removed in just two seconds. Without the mechanism, it is extremely easy to open and also easier to close than before. Without this fix I would have returned it as I work from home and open it dozens of times every day. The awkward lifting motion required to open the gate might have been a deal breaker, so luckily the bottom is removable. However, this only makes sense if you are using the gate for pets and not children. If you're using the gate to keep your little demon spawn in check, it's probably best to leave the bottom lock in place and deal with the fact that it's difficult to pick. BENEFITS - Keeps dogs where they need to be. - Durable enough. Only use the pressure fastening method and not the drill fastening method. I would use the drill method if the kids are leaning on it. - Easy to open and close AFTER the bottom locking mechanism is removed. CONS - Not suitable for 38 inch applications. I originally bought this for my 38.5" wide hallway. Using both extensions does not leave enough clearance between the wall and gate to install the clamp screws. But using only a single extension leaves such a large gap, that the hold down screws are almost fully extended which doesn't make them as strong. Instead I had to place the gate in the doorway which was more compatible. when you open it. The top locking mechanism seems cheap and poorly designed. I feel like that a spring mechanism or something with better tactile feel would be a big improvement. But I'm just picky. It has its flaws, but it gets the job done. I definitely wouldn't have kept it if the bottom locking mechanism wasn't removable. Maybe they should in the Manual mention that the bottom locking mechanism provides additional security, but e r can be removed if you just try to contain the creatures without opposing thumbs.
