I have an older model of this unit, not the same brand but with the same mechanics and it still works after years of use. My original model has a button on the back to release the side arms and the arms are spring loaded on the ratchet so the arms move apart. There is a small button on the lower right side of this model to unlock the levers BUT you need to press the button multiple times and the levers will release in small increments with each press. I haven't decided yet if I like the fully open or additional feature more, I think it just takes some getting used to. One more thing, I have a Nokia Lumia Icon phone and the screen on/off button is at the very top of my right hand, so I had to cut some foam to keep the closing hands from pressing the phone button. Those minor issues aside, this is a good little phone holder, durable and stays in place.
