I bought a HF 170 welder 3 years ago and modified it (you can find instructions on the web) to increase penetration and thickness that it can weld. I used Lowe's Lincoln cable for the first year as it is so much better than HF. The Lincoln cooked great but left a lot of splatters. Read the reviews and give it a try after the last Lincoln reel burned out. When I bought this wire 2 years ago my project was nearing completion (1/4 steel). Noticed an immediate improvement in spatter size and amount. The welds looked about the same. I didn't weld much until yesterday. Began another large run-in of the base of the machine (steel 1/4 thick). Was very impressed with the wire. Starts well and keeps working. Lots of smoke and brown deposits, but that's the way it is with all flux wires. I weld on both sides and can't break any of the welds when I'm done (attempted on a test piece). Maybe it's a little bit better at welding holes than the Lincoln I used, or maybe I'll become a better welder. I liked it so much that I ordered 3 more rolls.
