Although most people would use this for aquarium filters I bought this to include in my DIY COVID -Masks 19 to use . I was looking for a 10 micron fabric but couldn't find it due to the demand. This sandwiched between cotton fabric gives me more peace of mind than the 4 layers of cotton officials suggest. It actually has pretty good breathability and since it's mainly used in aquarium filters, it's definitely washable. It's better than disassembling and cutting an HVAC filter, plus HVAC filters rely on their electrostatic properties to reach the micron level that will wash out.
