Review on Razorri Comodo Ceramic Fermentation Crock - 2L Traditional Water-Sealed Jar With Glazed Weights - Perfect For Kombucha, Sauerkraut, Kimchi, Pickles (Tangerine Tango) by Scott Mauri

Beautiful and functional traditional fermentation crock (but I'm still hooked on glass)

Razorri Comodo Ceramic Fermentation Crock - 2 Liter (0.5 Gallon) Traditional Water-Sealed Jar with Glazed Weights - Fermenter for Kombucha, Sauerkraut, Kimchi, Pickles (Tangerine Tango)We make sauerkraut year round and sour pickles every summer, and I've always coveted a proper old-fashioned fermentation crock. This one is beautiful, a bold orange, and well made, and looks great on the counter. The little water well in the rim is very functional, keeping out cooties and fruit flies, while allowing gas to escape. I also love the split weights--designed in two pieces so that the circle they make is larger than the mouth of the jar. And they're adequate for sauerkraut. The crock is very roomy--you can easily ferment 2 heads of cabbage in this crock. While I love the look of this crock, and it really appeals to me aesthetically, I'll likely be going back to my previous glass jar & airlock combo. My glass jar setup isn't beautiful, but like being able to see the ferment in progress, and with the glass container, I can tell how it's coming along without having to take off the lid and poke around inside the container. That said, I don't hold that against this crock, since I obviously could tell going in that I couldn't see through it. ;)If you're more of a traditionalist (or maybe just more confident?), this is a beautiful crock and a joy to use. It's just not as pragmatic as glass for my typical quick ferments. It's so pretty it's still at home in my kitchen, just not filled with sauerkraut. I expect that when I start to experiment with longer ferments, I'll reach for this crock again, as the light-blocking ceramic will be a boon to longer ferments than my usual half-week sauerkraut and 2-3 week pickles.

Pros
  • Fermented foods have been shown to have a number of health benefits, including improved digestion, better immune function, and even reduced risk of certain diseases
Cons
  • It may take longer to clean than other fermentation vessels
