Review on Optimized Cooling Performance for NVMe M.2 SSDs with Powerful 20mm Fan Heat-Sinks by Louis Abrams

Use GUP, not fan and heatsink tape

On my Samsung 970EVO boot disk in Deep Learning/Image Recognition IDE (TITAN X, some other SSDs and Optane AIC and i7-8700@ 4.7GHz or i9-9900KF @5.0GHz), the thing works fine. I measured the controller temp at 170F+ with a FLIR camera. Once installed and under constant load, the case's external temperature doesn't exceed 115F (again by thermal imaging, so I don't really see what's going on under the cooler, but still.). Throttling problems are also gone. I'm not sure what electronics control the built-in fan, but it seems to work fine. One tip: use a few dabs of thermal paste over the heatsinks (manufacturer stickers that are actually heatsinks) instead of the included "dumb putty". Pads aren't nearly as effective as thermal paste at transferring heat to a sink. In addition, the controller is a temperature-sensitive element. According to the manufacturers, the memory is actually more durable even at higher temperatures, although I'm sure there is a limit to that, but the controller (the IC closest to the socket) needs the most heat dissipation, and you'll see that very clearly with the thermal image. So focus on getting good thermal paste coverage on that particular part.
