Review on AMPLock U LPCVRS Fifth Wheel Sidewinder by Lakshmi Pennington

Revainrating 5 out of 5

This lock is quality

I just wanted to give this lock 4 stars because I just received it and it hasn't been tested yet. I hope I never will. However, I am very impressed with its quality and decided it really deserves 5 stars. Semi-trailers are inherently less attractive to theft because the thief must be fitted with a fifth wheel on their truck. The 5 Series also takes a little longer to connect, chassis break-in etc. I wasn't overly concerned about my unit being stolen until recently one was stolen from my 'secured' storage. So I started looking for options. I looked at the boots instead of the wheels and decided that they were either too easy for a thief to bypass or too difficult for me to attach and remove. I looked at several Kingpin Guards and settled on this one. At 11.5 pounds, this is definitely a heavy-duty machine. It would take a lot of punching, cutting, sawing, burning or whatever to take this thing off. I'm pretty sure the would-be thief will just move on to an easier target. I bought a Pullrite SuperGlide clutch model. It fit perfectly and was easy to install despite its weight. It is very noticeable, which is why, as I said earlier, the thief will most likely move on to another device. The lock itself costs almost as much as annual insurance for my fifth wheel, but if you really want the insurance reimbursement headache of getting far less than the block is worth (at least to me), spend extra money on a new device and spend more time and money to set it up the way I want it. If by chance the thief manages to remove the lock without waking up the whole neighborhood, he wins and I buy a new block.
