In my opinion these are the best hood stays for the 2005 4runner. They installed nuts and washers just like the Original Equipment OEM cowl stays. No brackets and nothing more than washers required for some other types of luggage racks. One man's work, but I found myself supporting the hood with open crutches I had lying around when I sprained my ankle a few years ago. The crutch is adjustable and is used to hold the hood open. Do one side at a time. You will need a short 12mm open-end wrench. Before starting work, I sprayed a penetrating lubricant on each screw and let it sit for 15 minutes. It may not have been necessary, but the old screws looked a bit rusty (those were the original 2005 racks). With each twist, I loosened the top and bottom a bit until it twisted off completely. When installing new racks, I've found it easier to start from the bottom than the top. Both are tight but not tight. Work slowly and do not cross threads when tightening the screws. What difference does it make, these new struts now hold the hood higher open than the sagging originals. Closes and latches the hood as usual. No questions.
