Review on ๐Ÿงข Shoei RF-1400 White 3X-Large Men's Street Motorcycle Helmet by Preston Molden

Upgrade from an old model

I bought the RF-1400 to replace my old model RF-1100 which was badly worn and out of service. As usual, Shoei carefully designed the RF-1400 with rider comfort in mind. The large vents are easy to reach and gulp air, while the rear vent uses a negative pressure to blow hot air away from my head. My previous helmet didn't offer good ventilation, so I often rode with my visor open, which increased the risk of foreign objects and/or insects getting inside the helmet and the risk of injury in an accident. The RF-1400 allows me to keep the shield closed and locked while driving. Shoei has moved the locking mechanism to the center of the visor, making it easier to use with both hands and, they say, reduces stress on the baseplate. It was an adjustment learning how to unlock and raise the shield, but it only took a few tries for it to become second nature. The modified shell is believed to reduce lift and drag by 6% and 4%, respectively. I can't confirm those percentages as my wind tunnel is out of service, but it definitely FEEL more aerodynamic than my old model. Vortex generators molded into the sides of the shield are designed to reduce wind turbulence. Maybe it is, but telling people I have vortex generators on my helmet makes me feel like a Formula 1 driver, so that's a plus. The helmet itself has a beautiful matte black finish with a Pinlock EVO insert that reduces visor fogging. , and comes with a padded carry/storage bag to protect against accidental damage. It feels lighter to wear than my previous model and the ability to keep the screen closed and locked is a plus for me. The shield closes tightly and doesn't seem to leak, and the helmet itself is quiet. While I still wear earplugs on long drives, I appreciate the reduction in wind noise compared to my previous model. Although expensive, the SNELL certification was important to me to offer maximum protection in the event of an accident. This is my third Shoei helmet and certainly not the last.
