I bought this docking station to replace a broken Dell WD15 docking station. The feature set is good, but unlike the WD15 dock, it didn't have an on/off switch. Here's how I use the dock: I plug my laptop into the dock and it can stay in the dock for a few minutes, a few hours, or a few hours. days. I can then use the power button to turn the laptop on and off without opening the lid, allowing the laptop to act like a desktop when connected to the dock. I returned this product and purchased a Dell WD19TB docking station with on/off switch. While the new dock works. Unfortunately, this dock's webpage does not address this issue. I'm not saying that some of the competing docks have an on/off switch (Dell WD19, Lenovo Dock) and some don't (Belkin, etc.). The bottom line is that if you want to use a docking station that you turn your laptop into and all the peripherals attached to the docking station can be turned on and off by opening the laptop lid and using the laptop's power button, the Dell 6000 should be right for you. Good docking station. This is especially true when using a laptop screen along with other peripherals. I give the Dell 6000 four stars. However, if you want to keep your laptop closed when docking and rely on one or more monitors instead of your laptop's screen, you need a switchable dock.
