Review on πŸ”§ Remanufactured Domestic Steering - Cardone 20-0038F by Vincent Poolaw

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Goes great with my 2000 Passat

I just replaced the steering rack and it took two days of work and it was quite a messy and complicated project. Rack Rebuilder (Cardone) insists on installing this filter. The PS tank in my Passat has a built-in strainer and that's all I really need for filtering. It doesn't have a magnet though, so I can see the value of that extra filter. This filter consists of an aluminum block. Inside is a wire mesh basket riding on a spring. On top is a magnet in the shape of a flat donut. Apparently the spring allows the basket to move when the filter is clogged so it doesn't block the flow of liquid. So a bypass valve. I bought the 3/8" size. I put a filter in the return line to the tank. Don't put it on the high pressure side! Both the inlet and outlet hoses on the tank are at low pressure so that's your choice. Pay attention Just make sure the filter is properly oriented in the direction of flow or the bypass will not work. The filter is relatively easy to open, simply remove the retaining ring and separate the halves. The manufacturer recommends inspecting the filter screen every 30,000 miles. This isn't a problem for me as it's a good interval to flush my PS fluid anyway. There is a faint and tiny label on the filter indicating the direction the fluid should flow through it.It is so poorly made and hard to read once splattered with some PS liquid it was virtually unreadable I'm pretty sure that sad little sticker came after a few thousand miles will just fall off. My solution is to simply scribble a large arrow on the filter housing pointing to the retaining ring. This is the direction of flow. You can see this label on the Revain product image. It's so unusual that they decided to make a tiny flow arrow in the opposite direction that the "FLOW" legend reads. You need to do a lot of rotations to visualize how this filter is set when you see this label. The filter is strong and well made and will definitely last the rest of my car life. The filter can be cleaned, so that's a plus. The horrible label aside, I recommend this filter as a wise investment to potentially extend the life of your steering box.
