My red-eared slider eats part of the ramp too. My friend had to relocate her turtle a few years ago so I took her in as I have experience caring for turtles. I got his tank, swim platform, etc. I noticed that the platform I got was missing about 1/3 of the ramp so I figured it was worn out and replaced it. A little later I caught my turtle in the act. I watched him tear off a small piece and eat it. He didn't stop there, and now I know why the original was missing a big chunk. I don't understand why turtles are so apt to eat this stuff as I see it has happened to others as well. I am still looking for a suitable heating platform that can adequately replace this one. As a side note, the suction cups are indeed a waste of time as they only worked for a short time and then they don't stick anymore. I have suction cups for filters, heater etc and these are the only suction cups that have never worked after the first few weeks. I removed all the wire, let the platform levitate on its own, and placed the lamp right where it won't move anymore.
