Review on Vuelta ZeroLite Road Comp Wheel by Curtis Domus

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good wheels for the price (blackened)

These appear to be good quality wheels at a very attractive price with a few exceptions: the spokes are painted steel, not stainless steel as advertised. Since I don't drive on salty roads, it doesn't matter. However, I expect rust to develop where they attach to the hub and thread into the nipples. I lubricated these points with heavy duty marine grease to prevent this from happening. The rear hub requires a 1mm washer to fit a standard 10 tooth Shimano cassette. Well finished braking surfaces and good paintwork. You have to deliver skewers. After 2 weeks: The front wheel started to "bounce" with a clicking noise when braking. After thorough degreasing of the braking surface without success, a problem with the hinge in the wheel turned out. When the brake was applied with the pads directly in front of the pivot, the rim flexed inward, leaving the pivot with a raised surface that could hook the pad. Returned for replacement - more to come. A few months later: Got a replacement quickly and had no problems with it after about 3000 miles. I found them a lot more stable in tight corners, I think because they flex less than my old regular 32 spoke wheels. I changed my old front wheel to confirm this. I'm increasing my rating to 4 stars. About a year later: The needles were literally rusting on the blades. Replacing the 286mm x 2mm black stainless steel Wheelsmith spokes and aluminum nipples ordered from Revain for a total of $85 plus some lube to replace them of course. So the very attractive price of $130 is now not so attractive at $215. Otherwise, I'm still excited about the bikes.
