I have three other Caitlin Cinio books and when I saw this one I bought it straight away. There is a good range of motifs including snowflakes, squares, animals, hearts and napkins. The pattern includes written instructions and diagrams for each motif. At the beginning of the book there is a section on crochet basics, a table of contents and photo pages for each motif. All Caitlin motifs begin with a chain stitch; she doesn't use a magic ring on any of them (this technique confused me for a while so I was happy to avoid it). I use #5 cotton thread for designs with #6 hook and get good results with patterns. So far I've tried Hobby Lobby's Artiste series (you can get a set of 10 yard skeins for a reasonable amount, but don't buy embroidery floss as the strands break easily when crocheting) and the DMC Cotton Bead (great selection of Colours). , Cotton has a silky finish, 25 meter skein). I haven't tried using large hooks and yarn, but I think many designs work if you scale them up, although some of the thinner holes can fill up. So far my favorite has been the seahorse. I used multicolored brown thread and it went really well with this motif. Sometimes the multicolored threads make it difficult to see the details of the subject, so I would suggest using a solid color if you really want to see the details of your work.
