Review on Gray Microsoft LifeCam Studio - Full HD 1080p Webcam by Josh Andrews

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Yes, it's 1080p. Yes, it works with Linux. Yes, it slows down in low light.

This is a great camera for general webcam use and a decent camera for what I use it for. Skype and YawCam programs. You don't need the software that comes with this camera at all. It supports popular 35mm uncompressed formats and also supports 720p and 1080p in MJPEG format which is supported by Video4Linux2 as well as most Windows video capture programs. There are two things I would like to improve: 1. Every now and then it loses auto focus and tries again to find the right depth of field. There seems to be a setting where you can disable autofocus and just set it to 'far', which I haven't tried yet - hopefully that works. 2. Slows down the frame rate in low light. This is done to remove noise from the image, making the image less noisy. It also becomes more brown/greenish, presumably because the blue sensor is less sensitive to low light. And since the frame rate is lower, the image gets blurrier when you move. I've tried this camera on Windows and it works and I've tried it on Linux and it works. However, my use case for this camera is a little different than usual: I'm using them as "eyes" for a moving robot I'm working on. (Actually, I use two.) Overall, this is a solid webcam with high-quality images, especially for well-lit subjects. Cave dwellers are advised to either add lights or prepare for blurry brown low frame rate videos.
