Knitspeak is a great little book

Knitpeak is an A to Z guide to pattern language for knitters, giving them confidence in their new projects. It is for quick reference and is sized to fit in any knitting bag. Knitting language can sometimes be cryptic—a mix of abbreviations, numbers, jargon, punctuation marks, and other symbols—that patterns are typically used to write. This book is a knitter's dictionary translated into plain English, helping knitters easily go from confusion to confidence. Formatted in a friendly, reassuring tone and for quick reference, Andrea Berman Price's Essential Guide begins with an overview of how knitting patterns are organized. It then provides a complete alphabetical listing of all abbreviations, words, phrases, and symbols commonly found in patterns. Plenty of easy-to-follow Knitspeak drawings explain basic and less basic needlework techniques, and a range of sidebars cover everything from keeping track of forming at the same time to changing yarn and reading yarn labels. The appendix to the book is filled with valuable tips, diagrams and worksheets. from tracking simultaneous forming to changing yarn and reading yarn labels.
