Review on Pentek ECP5 BB Cellulose Polyester Cartridge by James Pfettscher

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Corrugated or coiled wire vs. virgin polypropylene

What is the advantage of corrugated wire over coiled wire? Folded ones have MUCH more surface area and last much longer. Many years ago I gave up spiral filters because of the superior water flow and durability of pleated filters. I really like her. But now experts recommend polypropylene filters. These new polypropylene filters do not have the same rating as pleated filters as they have a filtration range - the outer layer can be rated at 20 microns and the inner layer at 5 microns. This means larger particles are caught on the surface and smaller particles are caught as the water moves towards the interior of the filter. Experts say this method is better than pleated cellulose filter design, but I'm not sure. I'm currently testing both types at home and they seem to perform equally well in terms of durability. I don't think you can go wrong with these pleated filters. Of particular note is that the pressure drop across these filters is so low that they are very well suited to low water pressure situations. We have a gravity well in our basement that supplies water at 20 pounds of pressure. After the filter, the pressure is 19 pounds, which is still enough for a shower.

Pros
  • MORE LIFE 33% longer than many competitors using stain resistant media
Cons
  • Legacy model
