I was afraid of changing the substrate in my freshwater aquarium from gravel to sand. I did a lot of research on the subject and decided to take the plunge. I'm so happy I did! The sand looks more natural and cleaner. It's also easier to clean since most of the debris stays at the top instead of sinking deep into the gaps between the stones. A simple pass with a siphon hose removes almost all waste. I occasionally gently mix the top layers of sand to avoid gas pockets, but so far I haven't seen that as a problem. The use of Estes sand is strongly recommended. You must follow the instructions and rinse the sand thoroughly to avoid clouding in the container. I poured it into the bucket and continued to rinse it several times. When I put it in the pool for the first time, a lot of sand floated up and the pool was still slightly cloudy. I was nervous, but after a few hours everything calmed down completely and there have been no problems since. My goldfish seems a lot happier and will dig and pump sand. I use sinking granules and he eats it with no problem and spits out sand with no problem. It seems to be much better with sand.
