Review on ๐Ÿ”ง Yost Vises 445 Utility Combination: The Ultimate Tool for Versatility and Precision by Fred Massingill

Replacement for my 40 year old Craftsman

After nearly 40 years of using my Japanese Craftsman 391-5180 3.5" vise, I've finally gotten them too far pushed , stretched the bolt and broke the tracks the nut slides in. After a bit of research I decided a Yost 445 4.5" vise would be a good substitute. + Yost base rotates 360ยบ and has two Locking screws, one on each side. The base has locks to prevent it from rotating without having to tighten the locking screws. The Craftsman was adjustable less than 180ยบ and had a non-locking locking screw on the base so you could had to make sure the set screw was VERY tight to prevent the vise from spinning + the yost lead screw has a pretty stiff preload spring I mu You should grease both sides of the washer between the handle and the sponge to make it easier to turn. The Craftsman didn't have a preload spring - there was more grip play but less friction. The Yost post appears to be cast rather than machined like the Craftsman. (Think Chinese and Japanese quality.) - The screw was only coated with light oil. I covered it well with a thick layer of fat, which made spinning even easier. Yost's posable jaw moves more than I expected, about the same as the Craftman's after almost 40 years of use. The description says "rubber discs prevent the handle from slipping unintentionally". However, the washers are too loose to stay in place and prevent the handle from slipping under its own weight. I'm sure it will do what I need, but something tells me it won't and won't last that long. Insults Craftsman has endured for decades! Since I have more bad things to say about Yost than good things, why didn't I buy another Craftsman, specifically 51854? I do not know. Sears seems to be going under fast and I'm not sure if they'll be there to redeem the warranty when I need one. Both vises are very similar, except the Yost has a better pivot point. Equipment, size, weight, price and warranty are almost the same.

Pros
  • Tube capacity: 1/8" x 2" diameter filled jaws
Cons
  • Some small things
