I can't even tell if it's real silver or not but it looks and feels real. That is hard. It hasn't tarnished yet so it needs to be coated with something else it's not really silver. I suppose it's possible the coffee in the can is keeping them shiny. I don't have many expensive or exotic paraphernalia, and I only keep my coffee in the container I bought it in. However, every morning I get a little more joy or satisfaction from scooping my cheap coffee into my cheap coffee maker. The plastic scoop I used before I bought it lasted many years (20? more?) so I expect it to last long after I'm gone. So I can really recommend it. This is probably a good gift, although the recipient won't appreciate it until they've used it for a while, so I'd say it's difficult to find the right time for such a gift or the right person. I'm a guy who usually just wants strong, durable tools, maybe a quality kitchen knife, and I love this item. Should it be cheaper? yes, like everything else. Should they just hand you a plastic spoon in a coffee pot? Yes, it should be like that, but it's not like that anymore. If you're worried about the quality, I've been using it for a few months and it still looks brand new, but I haven't put it in the dishwasher or cleaned the brillo. It's cheaper than a pair of shoes and lasts a lot longer.
