I often make homemade sourdough with a savory crust, so I need a strong, sharp bread knife to cut it. This blade right out of the box was fine. I have bread knives that I've had for years and they were sharper and worked better than this new one that came right out of the box. To be honest, these knives are brand names and are significantly more expensive. But even with cheaper blades, this usually means the blade won't stay sharp for as long. For this to come right out of the box, I was expecting a sharper blade. Overall, I'd say that if you're just cutting a soft sandwich bread, this bread knife is probably fine. For really hard, thick-crust loaves of bread, I recommend going with another option. Bread, rolls, cakes
