The one I have is about twice as dark as pictured which is good for us as it will work in front of an open flame... and will get its fair share of embers and ash . It's more of a dark red, not orange. It's also a lot thicker than I expected, which is also a good thing, and the fur is very dense. We liked it so much we bought the rectangular one because the cats love it and sleeping in front of the stove will likely cause the burning fur to burn out leaving a very unhappy putty. We have a "fire room" and when the stove is lit it attracts our 6 cats and it's worth getting them to lie down anywhere other than on their knees. It passed the ember test and so far there is no sign of damage, although time will tell. Very happy with it and it matches the pomegranate floor tiles which is another plus. No complaints so we bought another one in a different size and the price was great about $27 and I don't think I can spend the current price of about $76...in fact I have both mats get this for less than the actual price.
