Christina (below), one end of the "thread" is reinforced about an inch so you can use that end to insert the thread into your ear and then close it pull through - in only one direction so we don't scrape the trash back and forth down the aisle. Some people shed more skin cells, oil, bed fluff, etc., which can collect in a small plug in the ear hole, and that's what flossing is supposed to remove by pulling it through. They work great for me! I simply dip the slack end of the thread in a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, give it a double pull and discard it.
