Review on Thermaltake Motherboard Addressable Universal CL P064 AL12SW by Michael Clarke

Not for 10700k under built-ins

The plastic mounting hardware is some of the cheapest I've seen and also one of the easiest to install. Great for Intel LGA-1200, although not officially listed as supported. The 10th Gen processors were only released last week, so it's possible the product information just wasn't updated. It's rated at 150W, which should be enough for a max TDP of 125 for 10700k. It includes a portion of universal thermal paste. My experience with other brands is that they usually include a second set of clips to mount a second fan, but not this one. In terms of performance, this is very disappointing. The idle temperatures remain around 40 degrees Celsius at 10700k. However, at full load the temperature quickly climbs to 80 and even over 90 on the R-20. I didn't see it going any higher, at which point I fitted a thermal restrictor. I thought maybe there was an installation error so I removed the cooler everything looked fine so I applied a new quality paste and reinstalled and it's basically the same as before. That being said, I'd say this cooler isn't up to the 10700k task. After a week of using this cooler, that cooler will go away and a better one will come. On standard workloads, it can't handle all of that. hot, but to keep it that way, the CPU fan often has to spin up to 100% and doesn't run at full speed. I figured I could get away with this $30 cooler since I'm using the default settings and not overclocking, but either there's something wrong with what I got or the product just isn't as good as it claims. It's a shame to spend money on it and then still buy an expensive cooler. Another downside is that I thought I could try liquid metal thermal paste, but the cold plate is aluminum, which is not compatible. In closing, I'm only mentioning it because I know someone will say it. The processor is not overclocked by default on the motherboard. This was one of the first things I checked. The CPU is configured to run at Intel's recommended base clock, voltage, all-core gain, and single-core gain settings. The only overclock I use is XMP for 3200MHz RAM and the only other change to the Intel settings is that I set the thermal throttle to 90 degrees instead of 100.

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Not sure
