Review on Arris TM602G Telephony Modem [Bulk Packaging]: Boost Your Network with Docsis Technology by Kendrick Breezy

Works great for telephony; separate newer modem for internet

I bought this modem at a very reasonable price to use purely as an eMTA telephony modem with my new high speed SB6190 for internet. The goal was to replace a rented combo modem from Comcast (TG862g) that costs me $10 a month! I felt that if I were to buy my own modem I'd prefer a faster newer modem that's more forward-thinking than the (expensive) TG862g model. The problem is that there are very few options that include a phone. The initial setup of the SB6190 worked without any problems with self-activation. However, I haven't even tried using auto-activation on the TM602g as I assume it's intended for a single combo device. All in all it took 3 online chats and 2 phone calls before I was able to get my phone online. The last call did it. One of the problems they had to solve was the hierarchy of the two modems in their system. Someone at Comcast put the TM602g first and then the SB6190 second. They had to be swapped so that the 1st Internet modem was active and the 2nd modem could then only be active for the telephone. However, the SB6190 didn't even seem to be active according to their system, even though it was online in real life. Also note that they used the CMAC for the phone modem, not the MAC address of the MTA, in case that matters. Note that I actually returned the first TM602G I bought after the first rejection, just in case it turned out to be faulty; I put a lot more effort into the second one because I didn't think it could be defective either, and the problem must be on Comcast's side. All this will pay off in 1 year; I should have done this earlier, but better late than never.

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • Vulgarity
