All in all a great device and once it works it works flawlessly. It's just a minor thing related to setting up the device that isn't clear. Ooma clearly has a long way to go in smoothing out the documentation and setup process. First, the Android app advertised does NOT connect to Ooma, and it's not at all clear what version of Bluetooth they're using. Technical characteristics of this device could not be found, which is very surprising. Ooma should make this a high priority in addition to the fact that their installation process requires an overhaul. In general, here are the issues I encountered while setting up the device: 1. The Bluetooth setting process via the mobile app didn't work for me as my current vintage Bluetooth phone wasn't compatible, which is very surprising. 2. The alternative method using https://setup.ooma.com ALSO didn't work with a laptop connected via an ethernet port, as they insisted on using a self-signed certificate which most browsers these days intercept and refuse to connect . . Shame on you Grandma! You need to KNOW! 3. Instructions are scattered and written by the marketing team, not real-world people who are likely to run into real problems. I find Oom's tutorial almost useless.4. The only REALLY helpful documentation is the Shortcuts Guide, which is very well done. Two copies will be provided and I plan to make copies to keep with all my phones.5. There are no technical specifications, which confuses me a lot. This should be the default for all devices, especially VOIP devices. Continuing my setup experience: how DID works to access http://172.27.35.1/ by default. The reason why the SSL connection via https://setup.ooma.com does not work is that most browsers intercept and prevent the connection to self-signed SSL certificates. This is a Trap-22 that I've seen on a lot of wireless devices. Ooma MUST convert these confusing aspects of the installation process into something more streamlined and easier to understand. I'm an experienced (now retired) professional webmaster and it took me 45 minutes to figure out how to wire this thing up. WiFi works. The Embedded Web Server setup menu really works and is very simple. I have a Google Voice device which is MUCH more comprehensive but does most of the work with Telos. What is not clear is the ranking and precedence for multiple wireless connections. Again, Mystery Sauce and I have yet to understand their system to handle this. Again, the Ooma documentation isn't very helpful here, but I'll keep working to figure out how it works and update it as I find out more. It is also unclear how the Telos boot process works and how long it takes. This is not covered at all in the manual and requires attention. Ooma Telos took a few minutes to get ready. This should be clearly described in the manual. Problems with Bluetooth also made themselves felt. The system categorically refused to talk to a Samsung phone just a few years old, and Ooma should clearly state the minimum Bluetooth versions on his device and in the documentation. Currently I cannot access the Ooma setup directly without the included ethernet cable. At least I had a way of progressing, but if Bluetooth is that demanding, why not have a range of Bluetooth adapters that plug into a USB port and give you options for a few Bluetooth specs other than this puny and non-working bundled one offer version . into the system? I think Ooma is a really good device. The main problem seems to be poor documentation and a Bluetooth issue that seems like a deep dark secret to those of us who want to know more. I still have to work with the Ooma team to port my old landline, but I'll post my experience here when I'm done. I really liked the security features for blocking spam calls with "unknown" and many other settings in the web app for the app. Time will tell how well this works. Another great feature is the addition of a forwarding number to use when the internet is down. It can be a wireless device for always-on coverage. Pros: I'm glad I got it. The price is reasonable for the basic service and I'm considering the Premier plan. That is MUCH cheaper than what we get from an old carrier whose prices are completely wrong. Goodbye landline, hello VOIP and Ooma.
