Review on πŸ”ͺ G TING Whetstone Sharpener with Flattening Feature by Dan Bobbert

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Worked great. Not super quality

Updated rating! Read below. For context: I've never used a whetstone and use cheap knives. They were very blunt and the sharpeners I had didn't seem to do anything with them so I decided to try this. I watched a few YouTube videos and followed them to the best of my knowledge. On the third try, my knife was sharp enough to shave my hair off! I soaked the stones, used 400 grit, then 1000 grit, then 8000 grit, then a compound leather honing belt, and it took me about 20 minutes (plus about an hour to learn). I am very happy with the results. while the stones are clearly of lower quality. The 400/1000 was a bit rough but I used a small leveling stone and it smoothed them out nicely. However, a 3000/8000 stone is a total loss. The side of the 8000 is a bit rough and the corners are chipped and damaged. The leveling stone helped a lot. The 3000 side is even more chipped and also badly scarred and I couldn't smooth it out with a straightening stone, so the 3000 stone is useless. Also, the text on the 400/1000 brick is very faint and difficult to see, making it difficult to tell which side is which. I have requested a replacement and will update my review once I receive it. Update: I received my replacement set and have already used it to sharpen about 7 knives with good but mixed results. Both stones in the new set I received are a bit long so they don't fit on the bamboo base that is also included in the new set. The 3000 stone still had small pits but after some use and some work with the leveling stone the pits were gone. All 4 sides are smooth and even as they should be. I've had fantastic results with some knives. The cheap black knife shown in the picture was already in good condition so I just polished the blade with a 3000 stone, an 8000 stone and a leather strap. It's amazing, it's super sharp and easily cuts through office paper. Most of the other knives I've sharpened turned out to be good, they could also cut office paper with a little more effort. I was trying to sharpen a tiny key knife and it was a disaster, I think I screwed up (it's about 1 1/4 inches long to be honest). Another cheap knife turned out well; It struggles to pass the paper test but is still sharp enough to be usable, though not surprisingly. I'm sure with enough practice and patience anyone can get very sharp knives with this set. It is important not to rush and not rush. If you see that you are not doing your job well and keep going, you will not get good results. Check your work with a marker, take your time, watch videos, practice, and you'll have razor-sharp knives in no time.
