Two bulbs arrived undamaged and both worked perfectly straight out of the box. They fit into standard American outlets and are designed primarily for softboxes designed for fluorescent lighting. I checked the wattage with a Kill-a-Watt meter and it showed 40 watts, not 85 watts as advertised. Possibly this is an accident due to the type of power supply used in the lamps. I then checked the light output with a lux meter and found it to be 163 lux compared to a 300 watt transparent incandescent bulb registering 458 lux at the same distance. Both lamps were bare with no reflector. On the plus side, they don't flicker and don't get very hot. So I would say that these lights are grossly overrated in terms of performance, even though they work like photo lights. Source. They're just not as bright as I expected.
