I have a 40 year old house with 40 year old bathroom fans. One of these was called the "Air-o-matic" with the model number 605. Over the years it got terribly scratchy and noisy to the point where it was a little scary because I didn't understand what that could be . make the noises he made. This fan motor is obviously no longer made and the fan assembly/case itself is completely different from any modern ones I've seen. Therefore, buying a whole fan kit and just swapping out the internals won't work. (For newer fans that need to be replaced, you don't even have to unbolt the old motor. You can just slide in the new motor and bracket since fan housings are now mostly standard.) I've almost resigned myself to replacing the entire housing. which is a big headache if you're not an electrician or handyman. But then I found this. I actually found a slightly different model somewhere that another reviewer mentioned as a replacement for his Air-o-matic, but I found out pretty quickly that all of these replacement engines look more or less the same and are basically the same shape. like my Air-o-matic. I also found that my fan mount actually has a single screw hole that is extended to give a bit of wiggle room to install replacement motors with slightly different screw configurations, so I just took a chance. I read that I need to convert this from CCW. on CW which made me a little nervous but it was very easy to unscrew the top two pieces and just swap them out - that was all it took. Then I just screwed it into the existing mount, plugged it in, and boom, the fan started working! I tested the airflow with a piece of tissue paper just to make sure it was blowing in the orientation I set it to, and it did. It turned out to be very easy to install and sounds like a brand new fan (because it is). . It might not be the *best* motor and definitely not quiet, but that's okay because I don't want silence when I'm doing my bathroom business. I like knowing the fan is on and I want other people to hear it too. So there's normal fan noise, which is good, as well as a slight hint of low-frequency engine noise or vibration. My other bathtub fan, which seems like a replacement (I'm not the original owner of the house), has the same sound, so I'm fine with it. It's barely noticeable, and I probably even hear it just because it's about fixing a noisy fan, so I give it a listen. Either way, it's a definite improvement over what it used to be. First, it's a 50fpm fan, like most "universal" fans and motors I've seen. That's great for small bathrooms, but I'm willing to bet there are even larger bathrooms where that just won't do. Most computer case fans move significantly more air than this. (Actually, it's not entirely clear why we don't just use those bathroom fans β they're smaller, cheaper, and easy to replace.) It definitely won't do for something like a garage, unless you have more than one. .In my case, however, I'm using this in a bathroom that's about 4x10. That's enough. After installation I found that my old fan was not doing anything at all; My mirrors fogged up when I showered and I had to open the bathroom door almost immediately to avoid that "sticky" post-shower feeling (when you feel like you need to shower right after you shower), even with the fan on. No longer. My bathroom is now completely dry after showering. I hope this helps someone with an old fan that you can't replace. Remove the vent cover and look at the fan motor. If it looks like this, you can probably replace it with this motor. Disconnect the fan and unscrew the bracket and look at the shaft length and fan diameter. You can take some accurate measurements, but I was just taking a chance. You can always cut the stem off if you need to. For me it was all just a replacement after I changed orientation.
