I have been using this brand for 8 years. either way, and I highly recommend it. I change mine every 3 months. I remove the filler daily and add it as needed and of course change the filler completely from time to time. My box is in a very small bathroom and nobody has ever complained about the smell, not even small children. I will tell you that in all the years of using this product as long as I stick to the above schedule I have not had a cat odor in a long time. These filters work.
