These bumps are very severe. Once you remove the stoppers they can be very difficult to squeeze and you will need to squeeze them again a little to install them. What worked for me was attaching the mating end of the shock to the top ball mount on the glass, then lowering the glass while pressing the other end of the shock against the tailgate. This gives you leverage to compress the shock. Once compressed it's much easier to keep it compressed and then maneuver the bottom end into position on the bottom ball mount. Very easy to install, but be sure to ask someone for help. To put them on you can nail them firmly to the bracket and it will continue. Removing them (or removing old ones) requires opening each cover as instructed, but installing new ones does not.
