To be honest, white toothpaste is easier to use than this stuff. Simply use a damp paper towel to smooth or texture as needed. The color is good, smooth matte white. If you smooth it down with a damp paper towel, it will leave a kind of satin finish. If you get the drips right you can do an orange peel texture, but this was very finicky. It dries quickly and after that it seems quite durable and ready for painting.
