Review on πŸ”Œ StarTech.com PCIe USB 3.0 Card (4 Port) - 3 External, 1 Internal - Native OS Support for Windows 8/7 - Standard & Low-Profile (PEXUSB3S42) by Jerry King

Revainrating 4 out of 5

This mainly works on a Dell R710 with Ubuntu Server 16.04

I needed a faster backup tool as the Dell R710 only has USB 2.0 ports. Adding this card doesn't give you any noticeable peak performance, but it does run at the top speed listed by my Costco Seagate USB 3.0 backup drive. The published maximum transfer rate is 180 MB/s. I got about 50MB/s with USB 2.0 ports. On a Dell R710 running Ubuntu Server 16.04 it plugs in and works pretty well. Turn off the device, install the card and turn on the device. A quick "lsusb" indicated the presence of a USB 3.0 hub. You'd better already format your Seagate external drive and have a file system on it. If you don't do this, USB hub errors will occur and you won't be able to get out of the error loop. Plug your Seagate into a USB 2.0 port, initialize it, place a filesystem on it, mount it and run a media test. Then unmount the drive, unplug it and plug it into a USB 3.0 stick. If you're still getting errors, you'll need to shut down the server, turn off the hard drive, and start over. How painful. What are we doing to reduce backup time? :-) 10/21/18 Edit: I changed the rating to 5 stars. Everything works very well 100% and I had no problems. The more I worked with this map, the more I realized that my initial problems were my problems, not the map. When two USB 3.0 drives were on the same card, I got a transfer rate of 175 MB/s. Update 4/117/19: I ran into problems after updating my Dell BIOS. On boot the R710 got into an endless loop of a USB bus error and then the boot said the bus power was off. 10 seconds later the same message. The only solution would be to disconnect the Seagate external drive and reconnect it after the boot process is complete. It's no good if you want an automatic restart. I fixed this by finding a used Dell PCI Express USB 3.0 (0YJ94F) card. I'm still giving it 5 stars because the card works great on my desktop PC.
