If you have small pieces about 1 inch thick, you should be done with that. I was trying to cut a 1.9 inch thick walnut and it was so scary because he wanted to make it fly and it happened twice. I would recommend getting a spiral grooving cutter instead, although it's 5 times more expensive it will be a lot cleaner and won't try to throw the wood out of your hands.
