I have a 99 VW Passat v6 gls. I had to replace the air filter as it has not been changed for a long time. I chose a K&N air filter because you don't have to change the filter, you have to clean it regularly after a certain period of time. I was able to do the replacement myself without having to take it to the shop for installation. I find it pretty easy to do it yourself. All you need are the tools from the Mechanical Toolbox. If you don't have a tool, you can just buy it at the store. Just follow the instructions that came with your air filter box and you should be pretty easy. After I changed the filter. I noticed that the engine sounds better and more powerful. Overall performance is definitely an improvement over my old filter. I have a feeling the engine sounds a bit like a turbo with more air now. I'm generally happy with the purchase, but I haven't noticed a big improvement from the increase in gas mileage, maybe just a little.
