Review on πŸ”Œ BESTEK 1000W Pure Sine Wave Power Inverter - DC 12V to 110V AC Car Inverter with Digital LCD Display and 4.2A Dual USB Charging Ports by Jay Arnold

Neat little inverter, no heatsinks or awful alligator cables

I looked at this inverter many times before deciding to place an order and compared it to several other inverters. The price, availability of front USB ports, and positive reviews made me choose this model over the competition. What I didn't notice when ordering is the compactness of this model. I have a photo of it next to a twenty dollar bill for comparison and you can see how small and powerful the form factor is. I deducted two stars for two problems. First, the inverter has absolutely no external heatsinks, and everything is tightly packaged in a relatively insulated plastic case that doesn't aid in heat dissipation. Well, to keep the device durable and portable, I'm glad it doesn't have long, sharp metal fins. But I think they could have designed the device better to rely less on the fan (which will fail over time and is probably the weakest link of this device). Second, the company ships this device with pathetic cables with alligator clips. It would take a madman to hook this up to a battery with alligator clips and then try to draw 1000 watts. This device must be supplied with cables that allow secure attachment to the battery terminals. I don't think the company is unaware of this (that alligator clips should not be used for the expected 1000 watts) and therefore I believe the company knowingly sells this device with an underrated cable that is cheap and unsafe. Will update this review if and when the device fails, but hopefully it will survive some of the tests I'm about to go through before relying on it in a real emergency.

Pros
  • Sleek design
Cons
  • No automation
