Over time, a freshly washed, sanitized plastic litter box will still smell. Stainless steel shouldn't absorb odors and these trays appear to be more durable. They have thick rubber feet, which is also necessary. I bought a few of these and plan to buy more. I also bought a smaller size for a specific cat. We breed rescue cats, so regular disinfection and deodorization is extremely important. I wish the price was lower, but if we don't throw them away in two years because of the smell, they are worth buying. The second one we bought arrived dented but was returned with no problems and promptly replaced. PLASTIC AS SOURCE OF ODOR. I had to temporarily keep the adopted kitten in the bathroom. I pulled out a clean tray that was maybe two years old and put fresh garbage in it. Within an hour I noticed the room smelled and the box had not been used. When the packaging was removed the smell was gone. We now know for a fact that other plastic boxes also carry an odour, including those that have a special coating to prevent odor absorption. Boxes are not used too often as we have at least one box per cat and an extra one is usually used.
