I was nailing a chair rail in two rooms and bought this wall scanner to help me find the studs. I've read the instructions multiple times to make sure I'm using them correctly. It would occasionally beep and light up to indicate the beginning or end of a hairpin, but not all the time. It's true that you have to make sure the scanner stays pressed against the wall with some pressure or it won't read accurately and if you pick it up at all you'll have to recalibrate it and start over - but even knowing this, I do not feel it pins in row. I ended up using it 5 times to find each pin and was happy to get the same reading 3 out of 5 times.
