I bought this after seeing a kitchen test recommendation on TV. I didn't read the reviews before deciding. I've been reading the reviews since I received them, so I turn to my experiences and comments on the reviews that may have influenced my purchase decision. 1. Yes, it's plastic. a. It is #5 and considered one of the safest. The use of high-temperature plastic is not recommended for health reasons. Studying this subject is important, and computer research yields a wealth of information. b. It's lightweight, even filled with water and pasta. Due to the handles on the sides, moving the entire container from the microwave to the sink with the lid closed felt secure. in. There is red and there is white.2. Instructions [on packaging and online] a. Wheat-based pasta has detailed instructions. Several types are listed with serving size, amount of water and time. b. Gluten-free pasta has a "one size fits all" label. There are special instructions for rice noodles. in. Various foods such as vegetables, rice, dumplings and the like are available. I don't eat gluten [GF]. Although there are several types of GF paste, the instructions are limited. So far I have used this twice with GF spaghetti cooked using traditional methods for 7-9 minutes. The first try resulted in a messy boil up and a good paste. The second time I looked at the microwave I stopped cooking just before there was a mess. It also resulted in good noodles. So I suspect that experimentation could produce a useful cooking chart. What I love about 2 colors is that one can be used for GF pasta and the other for gluten pasta. It would be helpful if guests who eat gluten are accepted without contamination issues. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to use it to cook pasta in the microwave. There are health issues and issues with time to make a cooking chart. I bought this item knowing it's unwise to cook in plastic, but sometimes it's ok. That's why I gave 4 stars here. 1] It does what it's advertised, 2] It comes in 2 colors, 3] It has multiple specifications for GF paste, and 4] I couldn't find any reference to the type of plastic used in the product description.
