Review on πŸ”§ Enkay 149-C Polishing Compound Kit for Enhanced Results, Convenient Packaging by Stephen Cernatescu

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Ideal for experimenting with different grit formulations for sharpening knives - somewhat dry/brittle for polishing right out of the box.

This is a handy and fairly affordable selection of different mix grains as each colored bar weighs about 5-6 ounces giving you about 2 pounds of mix for about $7 a pound. Seems like a good option to experiment with different grits for sharpening leather belts. After that, green and black seem to be all you need. While white is a popular choice for some blades, chisels, and especially leather cutting tools. Brown doesn't seem to be able to do anything black can't do better. Both the red and blue are thinner than the green, which is already good enough for a specular shine on the edge of the blade. For leather slings, these poles are big enough to last quite a while. However, you will need to heat the skin with a hair dryer or heat gun or treat with petroleum jelly before applying as the bars were quite dry in the package. For this reason, I see this set a little more critically when it comes to polishing wheels or rims, as the dryness of the sticks means that a lot of compound is lost when pressed into the fast-rotating polishing material. Perhaps they can be pre-soaked in the microwave or wrapped in a damp cloth. I'll experiment next time I need to polish something other than a knife blade. For knife straps, which was my main goal, they're good enough as they are. I've also experimented with multiple rods, using separate angle grinder polishing pads while polishing a stainless steel rod. This was effective, but too much dry mix was used in applying the sticks to the disks to complete the job and no effective presoak was found.

Pros
  • This is great
Cons
  • Some bugs
