I use them for pond filters. They catch a lot of dirt. I can wash them and reuse them multiple times. They don't stay stiff when wet, but that's not a big problem. I really don't know much about charcoal. I assume it works. I use it mainly because it's a great money saver. I don't usually cut it into small pieces, except for specific things I'm about to do. These hold up well. I can use them over and over again. Definitely worth the money. I like her. I use all three. I use ammonia, nitrates and charcoal. My ammonia and nitrate settings never run out, so I can't say they're not working. As you can see in the picture they catch a lot of goops. I just have to wash them and they're fine again. So I think it just depends on what you need it for.
