Great value alternative to the Fujitsu ScanSnap and a solid shot of Fujitsu's Fi class TWAIN scanners

I've had several Fujitsu scanners at work and at home including my trusty ScanSnap S510. After 11 years of service it finally gave up, so I set out to find a replacement, hopefully at a better price than what I bought my S510 for. After some searching I found this scanner and wanted to share my experience after about 100 pages scanned compared to the gold standard (Fujitsu): Size: Canon is significantly larger than ScanSnap or Fi scanners. Fujitsu does a better job of stripping down the design of its devices. Fujitsu's internals show this clearly (equipment scope, form and function). The Canon is about 2 inches taller, about the same wide, and about 1 inch deeper. Quality: The Fujitsu and Canon offerings are about the same (both support a maximum resolution of 600 dpi), color or black and white. Speed: Canon significantly faster (+20%). Both are heavily influenced by the speed of your computer, since that's where most of the image processing takes place. I'd say Canon is almost twice as fast at lower resolutions. At higher resolutions (600) both are slow. not painful, but both juggle tons of data to get there. Software: Fujitsu once provided a free copy of Adobe Acrobat, making it easy to justify the roughly $500 price tag. Currently. not much to manage this decision. And to make matters worse, Fujitsu never paid out the saved money to the customer after the package deal with Adobe ended. HOWEVER, HERE IS THE STRONG INFORMATION: If you use the ScanSnap, you are bound to use the Fujitsu software. With Canon, you get Canon software AND TWAIN support, which means you can use it all! So. When I can, I mostly use Acrobat for scanning. Fujitsu is stubbornly dropping TWAIN support in its home scanners, only offering it on the expensive Fi line (i.e. their $800 scanner). Canon adds this for free. It is a BIG privilege for me and was a major factor in bringing me to Canon. Software support: Fujitsu gets zero stars here. They are stingy with updates and make software distribution more difficult. That is, when Windows 7 came out, they refused to provide drivers for it (until user outrage finally pushed them to do so). Fujitsu also keeps its software under lock and key. where certain software just can't be downloaded (and good luck getting updates for them). From Canon: It's all on the website. One download for the main software, one download for the TWAIN driver. I feel like Fujitsu is really setting the user on fire with this, which really creates a negative ownership experience. Controls: Both the ScanSnap and Canon are a bit spartan in their physical controls, but they have enough physical buttons to get you started. Canon ups the ante with a 7-segment LCD which, while seemingly out of place outside of an old hotel alarm clock display, is functional and capable of providing plenty of information. Scanning ability: Although I haven't used Canon as much as my old Fujitsu, based on my experience with several Fujitsu's I can say that Fujitsu is the market leader in terms of scanning ability (and avoiding jams etc.). stuck) or double feed. and I've thrown some crooked bullets (e.g. plastic card) However, Fujitsu design is better in my opinion given a large feed roller (Canon has two). The LED when on is so annoying as when it goes to sleep and FLASHES BLUE This LED is also part of the power button so the best idea I had was to use a piece of tape and so far it has working fine (no more light and still able to use the button) Annoyance 2: The Canon software doesn't let the user run the "Save As" command. It scans and saves it using a fixed Naming convention what to rename irritation 3: fit and finish Fujitsu just felt a little better in the collection ie the paper tray on the Canon doesn't slide out smoothly while on the Fujitsu it feels oily and smooth Industry standards TWAIN : When you get a Fujitsu ScanSnap, you're tied to their software, plus a few unicorns here and there who somehow managed to sneak their way into the proprietary interface β€” unless, of course, you can shell out $800 for a Fi 7xxx series or so. Canon throws it in the box. so you can scan from their software. Adobe Acrobat. Corel Photopaint. everything that supports TWAIN. It's beautiful, trust me! And last but not least: the price! Canon is MUCH cheaper. Fujitsu used to cost a fortune, but it was worth it because you used to get a copy of Adobe Acrobat Standard in the box. but those days are gone and their price has never decreased. Get Canon! and with the $130 saved, you can buy me something nice for [insert your favorite holiday and/or occasion here].
