Poor performance, died after firmware update

After less than a year of poor performance (wireless devices across the spectrum either don't get proper DNS IPs or turn off altogether), I left the router running with the recommended firmware Updated to version , ending in 42. The router did not come back after either a power outage or a reset. Judging by the LED indicators, neither WLAN nor WAN was working. Even though it was still under warranty, the 90 day tech support ended so they charged me $50 for sharing the troubleshooting steps. The replacement device will be delivered within 7-10 days. While I'm at it, I also want to express my disappointment with the parental controls that Netgear routers are so widely praised for. I've found their use to be limited as they offer multiple layers of customization for specific devices on the network. Also, they were flawed from the start. For example, my own cell phone was completely blocked for several months, preventing me from accessing anything related to .org and the NY Times. I couldn't reset it with the almighty Netgear Genie. It took me a ticket for problems to reset my account on the server (neither of these protections are actually in the router, it turns out) to fix this. This isn't the first Netgear product to let me down and after this experience I won't give this company another chance.
