I saw no reason to keep paying Comcast $8 (soon to be $10?) to rent a modem when I could get one for $30. I took a screenshot of the modem's signal levels provided to me by Comcast to compare to a 'new' modem and diagnose any problems. My Comcast modem was an Arris CM820A/CT. With the CM820A I had 8 DOCSIS downlinks and 3 uplinks. Downlink power levels ranged from 2.03 to 3.38 dBmV. The SNR for each channel ranges from 37.94 to 38.98 using 256 QAM. Upstream power levels are approximately 43dBm using 64QAM for each of the three channels. I've never had connection issues and always get around 59 megabits/s inbound traffic and 12 megabits per second. The WBM760A has almost the same upstream and downstream performance and SNR. The only difference between the two modems is that the WBM760A only supports 4 downlinks. I didn't even think about it when I bought it. I still get the same speed in the speed test so I don't care but I think it might have some impact if you don't have good signal levels. The call to activate Comcast's modem lasted 18 minutes and 5 seconds. I gave them the MAC address of the modem (the modem config page has EMAC and CMAC, I gave them CMAC which I believe is the MAC address of the cable interface), Comcast remotely rebooted the modem and after a few minutes and multiple attempts to release /DHCP updates. My router (pfSense) had an internet routing IP (and IPv6). This modem seems to be taking a little longer to pick up the downstream and upstream signals, but whatever. Comcast said my bill (internet only) would go from $85 to $66. Go to 192.168.100.1. You can get the password of the day by googling "arris password of the day".
